The CIOT’s Autumn Residential Conference brought tax professionals together in Cambridge for three days of technical updates, lively discussion and networking.

CIOT’s Autumn Residential Conference returned to the beautiful surroundings of Queens’ College, Cambridge, bringing tax professionals together for three days of technical insight, practical discussion and valuable networking. Chaired by CIOT Vice President Jonathan Riley, the conference combined expert analysis of major developments with opportunities for delegates, speakers and sponsors to exchange ideas in a collegiate setting.

Day one opened with Rev Matthew Hutton, whose session, ‘Dying Tidily’, offered clarity and practical advice on preparing personal affairs for those left behind. The keynote address was given by Jon Sherman, followed by John D Bunker, who examined inheritance tax and pensions, encouraging delegates to take stock of existing planning strategies ahead of significant reforms. The day concluded with a panel on agent registration, chaired by Paul Aplin OBE and featuring Alison Kerrey, Jane Mellor and Mike Thomas.

Day two continued the momentum with Sarah Hewson on mandatory payrolling of benefits, followed by a professional standards update from Jane Mellor and a session on professional judgement in R&D tax from Jenny Tragner. Jeremy Coker chaired an interactive Making Tax Digital panel featuring Emma Rawson OBE, Laura Cumins, Kevin Sefton and Jonathan Athow. Peter Rayney later examined stamp taxes for typical corporate transactions, before dinner guest speaker Libby Jackson OBE brought a distinctive space-sector perspective to the evening.

Sunday’s programme featured Keith Gordon on recent tax cases, Jeremy Mindell on the top corporate tax issues facing practitioners, and Jitendra Patel on the latest developments and practical complexities in partnership taxation.

The breadth of the agenda ensured there was something for advisers working across different specialisms, while the residential format created space to continue conversations beyond the formal sessions. A huge thank you to all our speakers for their valuable contributions.

The event’s success was also made possible by the support of conference sponsors Tolley, Croner, Bloomsbury Professional and Claritax. Their teams contributed insights and connected with delegates throughout the event, helping to create an informative and welcoming conference experience.

From timely technical updates to thoughtful policy debate, the Autumn Residential Conference demonstrated the value of bringing the tax community together in person. The range of expertise and strong delegate engagement made this year’s gathering a memorable success.

Save the date: The next Autumn Residential Conference will take place from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September 2027 at Queens’ College, Cambridge. Open to members and non-members, it will offer three more days of expert updates, practical insights and networking. Email [email protected] to register your early interest.
