LITRG launch MTD hub for taxpayers
In January, the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group launched a dedicated information hub on its website to help taxpayers navigate the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.
With the introduction of MTD on the near horizon, the LITRG information hub has been designed to help taxpayers who are unable to afford professional tax advice by providing free, clear and practical guidance to support them in navigating the new rules.
From April, people with more than £50,000 of gross income (based on 2024-25 tax returns) from self-employment and/or property will be required to take part in MTD. This threshold will fall to £30,000 from April 2027 and to £20,000 from April 2028.
The new pages cover the whole of the MTD journey, from registration to filing end-of-year tax returns. Visitors can learn more about what MTD is, who it applies to, the exemptions available (and how to apply for them), and the specific areas that need to be considered by the self-employed and landlords.
There is also information on how to choose the third-party commercial software that will be needed to create digital records and file quarterly updates, as well as a section on completing the end-of-year tax return.
Victoria Todd, Head of LITRG, said that MTD represented ‘the biggest change to the tax system since self-assessment’ and that LITRG wanted ‘to make it as easy as possible for taxpayers to understand whether the rules apply to them and what they need to do if that is the case’.
Over the years, LITRG’s website has become a valuable information source, not just for those unable to afford professional tax advice, but also for CIOT and ATT members, the media, and other professionals and third-sector advisers. The House of Commons Library, which provides research and information services for MPs and their staff, routinely cites the website as a useful source of tax information and advice.
The website was featured in a prominent BBC News online report marking the self-assessment deadline at the end of January. Nearly 4,000 visits to the LITRG website have been traced back to the BBC report since it was published.
