This month’s ATT member spotlight is on Oisín Doherty, C. Doherty & Co Ltd, Accountant & Tax Adviser.

How did you find out about a career in tax?

My father has been an accountant and has run his own company for around 30 years, so accountancy was always a familiar profession to me. Seeing his work and the impact it had on his clients encouraged me to follow a similar path, and my interest in accountancy ultimately led me to a career in tax.

Why is the ATT qualification important?

The ATT qualification has been important in helping me grow professionally and develop my confidence within the industry. The knowledge and skills I have gained through studying and qualifying have strengthened my understanding of tax and given me greater confidence when dealing with client matters. As a result, I am better equipped to provide informed advice and support to my clients.

Why did you pursue a career in tax?

During my studies with Accounting Technicians Ireland, I discovered that tax was the area I found most engaging. I enjoyed the challenge of understanding tax rules and their practical application, and it quickly became a subject I wanted to learn more about. Pursuing a career in tax was therefore a natural next step, allowing me to continue developing my knowledge in an area that genuinely interested me.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Reliable. Organised. Easy-going.

Who has influenced you in your career so far?

My father has been the biggest influence on my career to date. Having worked as an accountant and run his own company for many years, he inspired my interest in the profession and encouraged me to pursue a career in accountancy and tax.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of doing the ATT qualification?

Be prepared to make some sacrifices and put some of your favourite activities on hold while you study, as the qualification requires a significant commitment of time and effort. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but the knowledge, skills and confidence you gain make it a worthwhile investment in your career.

What are your predictions for tax advisers and the tax industry in the future?

I think tax advisers will be needed more than ever in the coming years. Tax legislation and compliance requirements continue to evolve, and there are many rules, laws and different approaches that require professional judgement and expertise. While AI and new technologies are likely to play an increasingly important role in supporting the profession, I believe there will continue to be a strong need for tax advisers to help clients navigate complex issues and provide tailored advice.

What advice would you give to your future self?

Believe in yourself as much as I believe in you!

Tell me something about yourself that others may not know about you.

I love being active. I can’t sit in the house without having done something, so I always keep myself busy through sports like Gaelic, soccer, golf and heading to the gym.
